“Berchie’s shimmering vocals transports us straight to the sunshine” – CLASH.
Lizzie Berchie is a singer-songwriter and producer born and raised in East London. Fusing her childhood influences of R&B, neo-soul, jazz, reggae and highlife, Lizzie creates her own unique and infectious soulful sound that explores a multitude of essential themes including the celebration of life, love, and self-empowerment. Her musical influences span from Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday to Erykah Badu, Jill Scott and Cleo Sol.
Learning piano aged 12 was the beginning of Lizzie’s music producing journey. She began seriously writing and producing when she was 15 years old, shaping musical ideas into songs and experimenting with different production techniques. Lizzie went on to study song-writing at Leeds College of Music where she met future collaborator Danny Hilton and joined his collective Project Hilts, playing live across Leeds as well as London. Fast forward to the outbreak of the pandemic, Lizzie started collaborating with Danny Hilton to work on what would become her debut EP ‘Under the Sun’.
Lizzie released her debut EP ‘Under the Sun’ to the world in the summer of 2022, the 5 tracks featured standout singles ‘Pass Time’ ft. Kofi Stone, ‘Growth’ and ‘Nsala’. The EP received praise from the like of Bandcamp Daily, NOTION, The Blues Project, The Floor Mag, and more for its skillful and ambitious blend of sounds spanning R&B, neo-soul and jazz. The success consequently parlayed into a sold-out headline show at The Servant Jazz Quarters in London and slots opening for Loyle Carner at Lafayette and Pip Millet at o2 Shepherds Bush Empire.
Just over a year later Lizzie swiftly followed up with her sophomore EP ‘Am I An Adult Yet? in September 23’ and won the Project Of The Year award at the State of R&B Awards 2024. Described by New Wave Magazine “Am I An Adult Yet?’ invites listeners to embark on an incredible audio journey filled with seamless vocals.” A down to earth declaration on the whirlwind roller coasters that come with young Black British womanhood, the EP sees Lizzie boldly summon feelings of questioning, searching, longing and uncertainty. Arriving after the release of singles ‘I Hope’, ‘Flaws & All’, ‘Don’t Get Ahead of Yourself’ and ‘We Found Love’ the EP earned plaudits and praise from reputable outlets like CLASH, The Independent, COLORS, The Line Of Best Fit, and WE ARE SOUL. The tracks simultaneously secured radio plays from Jamz Supernova (BBC6 Music), DJ Target (BBC 1Xtra), CassKidd (BBC 1Xtra), Mary Mandefield (BBC Radio London), Jess Iszatt (BBC Introducing) and much more.
Elsewhere, Lizzie Berchie has made considerable strides building her pedigree as an in-demand live and touring act. To coincide with the release of ‘Am I An Adult Yet?’, Lizzie headlined London’s Omeara in October 23’. In 2023 Lizzie also made her debut on the festival circuit with dazzling showings at Brixton’s Cross The Tracks, Leeds’ Last Time Out and The Great Get Together Festival where she played the BBC Introducing stage.
